36 week survey

How far along: 36 weeks. Only 4 weeks left till Due Date!! Whoa how time flies...

Size of baby: Your baby is still packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. She now weighs almost 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and is more than 18 1/2 inches long. She's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered her body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath. Your baby swallows both of these substances, along with other secretions, resulting in a blackish mixture, called meconium, will form the contents of her first bowel movement

Total Weight Gain / Loss: Holding strong at 36 lbs up, no increase this week. Yea! Which, if you consider that she is up a little over 1 lb from the last time my doc measured her, it means that I myself actually lost weight. Thank goodness! But it goes to show you that living in Switzerland will naturally slim you down compared to being in the US... more walking, more natural food, smaller portions...

Gender: Baby GIRL - little Kate

Movement: Same old same old... lots of pokey stretching. She has added head butting to her repertoire... her head is right underneath my belly button so it feels really funny when she s stretching.

What I miss: Nothing.

Sleep: Still sleeping great though I had a couple of sleepless middle of the night hours thinking about the version...

Symptoms: She has flipped back to her feet being on the left side and head right underneath where my belly button is which means that she's now headbutting me pretty painfully every now and then when she stretches. Other than that nothing new.

Cravings: Pain aux chocolat (a type of flakey pastry with chunks of chocolate inside) and other baked goods. Yumm! I get it almost daily at the Supermarket downstairs. You just can't do low carb in Europe...

Best moment of this week: Selecting and meeting Kate's pediatrician, Dr Dania Haeberli, and talking through what we can expect aftere she's here. Dr. H is super sweet and supportive and I am so glad I picked her to be our lead pediatrician. She already gave me Kate's first ever prescription for Vitamin D drops and special baby booty cream. It was so funny to see the prescription being written out to Katherine Wilkinson!! Makes it a bit more real. Here it is...

What are we looking forward to: Next Friday when our doctor will attempt the external version. The waiting is killing me.

Randoms: Here is an update on a friend we know who also had the version done (last Friday). It did not work for them, their little boy is still head up, BUT both he and Mom are doing fine. Aside from it being a bit uncomfortable, the procedure went without any complications. Here is what Jen wrote me about it...

"Okay, here are the details. I checked in a few hours before the procedure and they had me fill out and sign a ton of paperwork. Most of it was just in case and with administering IV and medication. Then they draw blood to verify my blood type and in case you need any if you were to have an emergency c-section. She hooked me up to the IV right after that so they would only have to do 1 prick.

The doctor came in and then told me that they would not be doing an epidural and just using a little medication through the IV. They gave me 1 medicine that relaxes your uterus, which made me feel like I had drank a red bull (heart races) but then they gave me a little pain medication to calm things down. The pain medication just relaxes your tense muscles, you can still feel what they are doing. They made me undress fully and wear a gown. They had me in a labor room where they had towels and extra padding on the bed.

So they then brought the ultra sound machine in and checked the baby and the DR verified her hands and where she was going to try to push. She pushed on his head and bottom to try to get him to go. She tried clock wise and then counter clock wise. This was def. uncomfortable, but not unbearable. It felt as if she was pushing my stomach in about 4 inches down and then started pushing. After she started, I just wanted her to keep going until it worked as we were already there and in the middle, but she only did it for 10 mins max. She just said there was no way, he was not budging at all.

Would I do it again? Yes, it really wasn't that bad and it was worth a shot.

After I just laid there waiting for all the medicine to wear off. After about 20 mins or so I got thirsty and asked for water, but she said to only have a little incase i still needed an emergency c-section. The baby's heartbeat did drop once and I had to lay on my side. She said I had a pretty intense contraction, but I didn't feel it. I did feel nauseous. I laid there for about 1 hour and a half -2 hours. Everything was good to go and I was sent home. She said I was getting light Braxton hicks contractions still (I didn't feel them) but she said it was normal and I can go home.
I feel completely fine and normal now and he is moving like usual. My stomach is sore today to touch, but Max seems to be doing just fine."
As you see, nothing to be terrified about.
And fnally, the 36 week belly picture
