Now this one was a proper snow experience! Once again, just before Valentine's Day we started hearing reports that a massive snowfall was expected. Oddly enough I found myself at the grocery store getting milk and bread - because we happened to run out of it that day - as the first flurries were starting to come down.
Katherine's school went on without cancellation again, which I really
appreciate about them. They are pretty small, and do not follow the
normal Meck County decisions as most day cares and preschools in the area do.
Plus they are only open till 1pm so on early release days their program would
not be affected even if they did.
When I was picking Katherine from school at 1pm,
the snow was already starting to come down pretty heavy and she kept saying
'Look at all the snow outside!!' That was so cute. Once at home, she went down
for a nap and the snow kept coming down. This is what it looked like on day 1.
When she woke up we had good 3 inches on the ground already.
We went out to
play and I was pulling her around in a little sled which we borrowed from the
neighbors. It was super cold so we didn't stay out too long.
It kept snowing that afternoon and through the night and we eventually ended up with about 6-7 inches of snow. Though some other spots in our town apparently got up to twice as much.
The next morning we met up with Katherine's friend from school, Leila, for
some sledding southern style! Here's a video of Leila's dad pulling the girls
around. Yeah, that's a blow up boat put to good use since nobody really owns
proper sleds here! We were missing CJ as he had to go to work despite the snow.
The
girls also made a little snowman and tried to put him to work clearing the snow...
We
played outside for quite a while, that is until Katherine got really cranky and
cold and was acting like she really needed to go back in. She was all bundled
and in several layers of clothing but still her snow pants were wet from
rolling around in the snow and her boots felt damp. I expected that of the
boots since they were just nice fashion boots. Sure they had lots of fluffy
insulation and thick rubber soles but they were still just show, not snow,
boots from Target. But I was pretty mad about the pants. Next year I am getting
her proper waterproof snow pants even if I have to pay $50 for them.
In
the afternoon it was time to go out and play in the snow again. This time daddy
came with us. It was super warm by then and the snow was melting quickly so we
decided to quickly build a snowman before the white stuff got too mushy. Here
he is!
And
yes, in these pics Katherine is wearing her 12 month size snow pants because I
felt so disgusted by the other pair...which was small too (18m size) but at
least somewhat fit her...
We
pulled Katherine around in the little sled and then we went down to the golf
course across the street in search of some hills. And sure enough we found some
pretty good hills, and we - or rather Katherine - had some fun sledding down.
This kid is fearless! She was zooming down the hill squealing and calling for
more as soon as she reached the bottom. Definitely her daddy's daughter. I am
not so brave!
This
is what our street looked like that afternoon. Pretty bad...
And
here is the main road out of Birkdale. No biggie !
Our
street is considered one of the main thoroughfares in the neighborhood so we
got plowed on day 1 of the storm, but not on day 2. I was dreading the next
day. Because you know what happens when all those massive half melted piles of
slush freeze overnight when it gets cold. Yeah, sure enough, the next morning,
Friday, our driveway and the street were covered in a thick layer of ice. I
made CJ come by and take Katherine to school as I did not feel comfortable
driving in those conditions. But luckily by 10am everything was already melting
again and that afternoon our street got cleared again so it was all good.
What a fun experience for everyone! So glad Katherine is a fan of snow and sledding! Anoter year or two and we might try ski school!
