After lunch in Thonon, we decided to return home the roundabout way, that is take the back roads inland behind the first row of mountains which surround GVA, just so we could get a better view of the Alps right behind.
I can honestly say now that the local maps SUCK big time. CJ is really good with directions and nagivating so I can state with confidence that it is not us, it's the road numbering system and road signage that is bad.
In any case, we made it up over the big hill and survived.
While crossing one of the little towns we were stopped by a local bike race. Kind of cool looking. P.s. there were a lot more guys on bikes... my camera is just really slow. May need to upgrade to that Nikon at some point.
Later we stopped in a tiny village of Col-de-Cou to take these gorgeous shots.
One of them is Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Europe (over 15,000 feet high! Wow!). Not exactly sure which one. I can tell which one when I am looking at them in Geneva. This is a different angle though.
Can't wait to go climb one of them. Mont Blanc is on our must see list for the next couple of months.
One mountain that is definitely slightly more accessible is Mont Saleve, that's the Big Dome which you can see so well from the city and partly from our apartment windows. We passed it on the way back into GVA. Must-go-there-soon! Here's just one photo... It deserves a post of its own so I will post more about it after we've actually gone there.
