Allrightey... This time I will try to publish this update in the actual month of her birthday....
Katherine turned 12 months old on February 19th and here are her monthly updates.
Stats:
Weight: 22lbs 12oz - 75%
Height: 31.5 inches - over 97% !!! At least we know where she gets it from...
Head circumference: can't remember the measurement, but it was also 75% as usual.
She is a tall lean playing machine! According to Carter's clothing size chart she is right in the middle of the 18 month height range, but her weight is well within the 12 month range. She moves so much now that she is just much leaner than before. Not skinny by any means, still have the chubby baby legs going, but definitely leaner.
Sleeping:
Not much change here. After a few days of weird napping she went back and continues to be on her 2 naps a day schedule. Still around 10:30 and then 3:30. About an hour each. Bedtime is still 7pm and she sleeps till 7-7:30. She is still waking up early in the morning and I continue to give her milk but I am trying to slowly decrease the amount she has at that feeding so that we can gradually eliminate it.
Eating:
Towards the end of the month I started freaking out that she wasn't really into finger foods and feeding herself, other than Cheerios and cut up cheese stick, so I started pushing more stuff. She still hates bread and any kind of baked good. But she absolutely loves lunch meat slices, cheese, baby carrots and green beans. She also likes green peas which is really funny since she hated them as puree. Not a big fan of cut up fruit (like mandarin oranges, peaches or banana pieces). Not sure if it's because they are slimy and tough to pick up or what.
One day we were having lunch at a Mexican place and I ordered grilled fish taco and she kept scooping the fish off my plate and showing it in her mouth! Too funny. She also liked tortilla chips... what a kid!
She is giving me more and more trouble with baby food and she's even rejecting her favorite mashed banana with yogurt and baby pastina with tomato sauce. We are trying all kinds of different stuff though. I know that kid's appetite is supposed to decrease drastically after their first birthday and they gain 3-5 pounds the entire second year (compared to tripling their birth weight in year one) but she has dropped the amount she eats so drastically I don't know what to make out of it.
She now quite enjoys the baby food pouches and I started buying a new kind, called GoGoSqueeze, which is applesauce with other fruit. They are a much better deal and there are a lot of varieties. I still can't let her eat those by herself though or she will squeeze all the food out all over herself and her tray. It's such fun to make a mess...
Ever since we figured out that she was signing for 'milk', she's been getting more of it, she is asking for it a lot. She loves her milk. And right at 12 months I started giving her regular whole milk and she drank it without blinking. She is used to cold milk, as I often keep her formula in the fridge so she chugged her sippy of whole milk like it was nothing. I don't think she even noticed it was something different.
As far as timing of meals, it is still pretty similar to last month. We now have breakfast and lunch together (around 8am and noon), and then she had her dinner around 5pm and bottle before bed.
She is completely off the bottle during the day, only using her straw cup and sippy cup. Once we stop the early morning feeding, she will only have the evening bottle, which according to her doctor should be the last one to go, but we should try to be done with it by 15 months. I really don't see much harm in that one bottle, so we will see what happens. The doctor wants us to change her bedtime routine and do the tooth brushing before her milk so that might actually coincide with switching p from bottle to sippy for night time. I just need to find a big enough sippy to accommodate all her evening milk. Our current cups only fit 5oz, and she drinks about 7oz at night.
Milestones and Randoms:
I have seen two huge developments this month. One of them is language. She understands soooo much of spoken language it is astounding! She understands both words and sentences: food, drink, bear, monkey, dog, bunny, giraffe, put your head down, drink your milk, give xyz a kiss, up up, down, shoes, socks, diaper... I can't keep track of it. If I say the word she looks or points to the object. I kept testing this. In her room I would say 'where is the bear?' and she would look over to the corner where her 3 bears were. She has a 4 foot tall giraffe her Nana and Grampy gave her for Christmas and when I say 'let's go say hi to the giraffe' she looks over that way.
I studied language in college and have learnt several foreign languages in my life so it is just such a cool thing to see a tiny baby learning a language and understanding things.
She is saying 'dada' a TON! She definitely calls CJ 'dada' but then she will turn and call herself 'dada' and point to other things and say 'da'. I wonder if it means 'that' because we keep saying 'what's that?' and it kind of sounds similar. We keep trying to teach her that I'm Mama and CJ is Dada. I'm sure she is getting it but she is not saying Mama like she means it yet.
Another cool thing is she understands some body parts! She will point to nose, ears, feet, belly (if we're lucky). Her doctor was pretty impressed with that and said that was a 15 month skill.
Another milestone is a motor skills one. She is finally crawling like a big kid! Yea! No walking yet, just cruising and walking holding hands. But she is finally crawling on her knees and she sooo fast!!! Typical! Once she starts something she gets sooo good at it! Sometimes I hear her chubby little hands smacking the floor pat pat pat when she is getting somewhere and it is just sooo fast! I know that to most of you lucky moms out there whose babies have been crawling since 6-8 months this is nothing. To us it's huge that she finally got her belly off the ground.
She still loves music and will bob her head, bounce and shake her booty when she hears music. She has this dance move 'head head head, booty booty booty' and it looks sooo cute!
She is still Miss Independent though towards the end of the month she started getting super clingy and whiney, mostly in the afternoons, and I think it's because her molars are coming. I watched her on the monitor as she goes down for a nap cringe and cry looking like she's in pain. I need to start administering Baby Tylenol regularly.
She still loves animals some of her favorite toys are her 3 touchy-feely books with furry inserts and all her farm yard toys that make cow, sheep and pig sounds.
Oh, she is turning into a real girly girl! She was super interested in her friend Emery's princess tiara, so we got her one, and she is obsessed with necklaces! I got her a few of those cheap Mardi Gras bead strings and she somehow finds them amongs her toys and shoves at least 3 on her neck. Every time I turn around she has another necklace on. And when you try to take them off, she will scream and fight you! Too funny!
Oh and you will see in the photos, she has a lot more hair now. To me it still feels like nothing especially when I see some of her friends with thick curly manes, but then when I look at her pictures even from when she was 8 or 9 months old, it is amazing how much more she's got now. I can actually clip and little bow in there if I'm lucky! It still grows in this funky little whoop-tee-doo on the top and I am trying to smooth it down with detangler, but at least we have hair now.
I could go on forever about this little girl... Here are her official 12 month shots with her bear. Absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to keep her still so it is what it is. I'm shocked that she didn't fly off that glider with the amount of climbing around she did...
Allright... I'm done with this photo business... there are toys on the ground...
And here is the only semi decent one I was able to get...
